New GUV songs STREAMING on MYSPACE

Hey, even though I hate doing it and it feels like I'm spoiling the vinyl surprise I've decided to post some upcoming/recent stuff on my myspace.

The Songs:

Call Me When The Cat Dies -
I believe I've posted about this song a few times (maybe even the entire lyrics somewhere on this blog at one point). I just really like it because its about my cat, and I can't believe how sinister this song sounds.. considering the fact that its a love song!
It will be available on Criminal IQ in the next couple of weeks (check out that new Claw Toe 7" too, its cool). It will be my first release of 2010.

Roommates - Back to The Sun/Girlfriend Swap Cassette -
I made a really bad music video to this 1-2 punch (2 songs connected together on both sides of a cassette on Scotch Tapes kind of 90's effort by me and my roommate, Mark Fosco (of marvelous darlings). Basically it came about while me and him were really stoned one night and I heard him playing the opening riff while I was trying to watch a movie in my room but having a serious A.D.D spell and not being able to sit still. I played drums, he played guitar through a bass amp - and I kept orchestrating more and more parts to which he would respond very well too (with every sip of wine), and one song became 2 and thus this cassette. He convinced me to write the lyrics based around the name "Back To The Sun" which originally I kind of shrugged off as just another Mark idea about wanting every song about beaches, surfing, or "summer nights" - but it turned out well. We are singing at the same time on both songs. While recording vocals Marks girlfriend (Sacha) was sitting there and influenced the theme of Girlfriend Swap (no explanation neccessary). She also contributed a good part of the lyrics, as she is clearly into the idea of "the swap".

The Cutter
This is the B side to a 7" called Bedtime Stories coming out on Plastic Spoons Records sometime in the next couple of months. They are from France. The dude, Abe, works at a clothing company that is also going to put out a Guv record (and The Bitters too). They are uber fashionable, and Paris is fun. Anyways - This song is about a time in my life (late teens) when I spent a lot of time cruising the internet for middle of the night hook ups with girls. I would talk on ICQ and then steal my mums car and drive into the middle of no where usually (or bad neighborhoods) and usually have an awful experience (I have millions of tales to tell) and drive home - where if I hadn't been laughing, I'd surely have been crying. This not so laughable song is about someone I hung out with in the middle of the night in a Mimico Housing Project (west end of Toronto) who was very keen on having wax poured all over her hands. She took much pleasure in cutting herself up and showed me her scars (how do ya like that, Grandma?) , then got really angry for some reason and showed me all the holes she'd punched in her walls. Kind of a dark memory.. no? I hope she's ok. The song is just my retelling of the experience. It always stuck with me.

The A side "Bedtime Stories" has an even more revealing story. The record will feature hand drawn art by Amanda Crist of an old naked saggy skin woman bleeding with penis's all over the back cover... if all goes to plan.

Ok, i've officially said way too much, ruined the mystery, and you might aswell not even go listen at this point.

Peace!

The vinyl surprise is all very well if you're fashionable enough to own a record player.

I was feeling trendy and bought a copy of Virginia Creeper - it LOOKs great, if you ignore the fact that the vegetation on the cover looks more like Boston Ivy - but I have to go onto your myspace to listen to it.

It is in fact NOT virginia creeper, but the murderous greenery serves the song quite well whatever it may be.

Jeez did you get Iggy Pop to do the mix "Call Me When the Cat Dies"?

I was referring to when Iggy remixed Raw Power and put everything in the red, it's a really raw mix. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_Power#Remastering

IT HAD TO BE LOUD SO MY CAT COULD HEAR THE FREQUENCIES, DUH!! ;)

Hmm now that I think about it, the track reminds me of Jay Reatard, except you're singing about a cat instead of an ex you wanna kill. Not that that's a bad thing.

in terms of snotty, well written, punk music - most people only have jay reatard to compare it to.. sadly!

Ah-hem "At this party there was about a 2 hour long drugged up talk about recording techniques between myself and Jay Reatard. I came home, wrote the songs in about an hour, and recorded them with all the new tips I'd learned. This explains why the record sounds a bit reatard-esque." - Quote from this blog.
